Charity boost – At a national celebration to mark 50 years’ of potato growing by McCain in York, the club’s webmaster decided on an impromptu charity fund-raiser for the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Tim Papworth, who was wearing his distinctive designed waistcoat, featuring potatoes naturally, offered it to the highest bidder. It made £1,300 for the charity. And as the event, which involved the 400 McCain growers from across the country producing about 15pc of the country’s potatoes, was staged at the National Railway Museum, Tim duly arrived by train – setting off from North Walsham, via Norwich, and Peterborough.

Charity's Million Pound Success
Almost £1,000,000 has been raised for farming’s charity in Norfolk since 1986, said the retiring RABI county secretary.
Sally Mitchell thanked 250-strong supporters at the latest Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution’s summer cocktail party at the Norfolk showground.
A total of £947,043.11 had been raised – including £161,000 from the last 33 cocktail parties, she said.
The annual eve-of-show cocktail parties, brainchild of former NFU county chairman David Ritchie in 1985, had gone from strength to strength with the support of the Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association.
Mrs Mitchell, who started fund-raising for RABI at the Acle NFU dinner dance in 1982, was joint deputy chairman of farming’s charity between 1996 and 2004.

Thanks for great honour. Stewart Marsh wrote after being awarded the E H Wenn President's Cup. "I am still over whelmed. I regard it as such an honour and privilege to receive this award and totally, as far as I am concerned, out of the blue. I couldn't have believed that I would have been considered for such an honour in a thousand years."
He received two certificates at the March 2018 annual dinner, one for runner-up in the barley and another for second place in the wheat cup for Milligen McLeod Farming. "I was stunned, amazed and totally surprised when my name was announced as the winner of the President's Cup. To have such recognition by the farming community means more to me than I am able to express," he added.
In his 27-year managerial career with the late George Milligen and later his nephew John McLeod, he won a total of 17 trophies, including eight barley, five times with wheat, sugar beet and also the inter-club malting barley supreme championship.
